Mel Jhey's practice explores the somatemotional connection through material, process and environment. Working primarily with ceramics alongside drawing and installation, she sees the materials she works with as responsive, unpredictable collaborators. Her process is fast and physical—allowing clay, glaze and fire to shape the final form. While deeply spontaneous, her work remains grounded in research and historical inquiry into how ancient objects, sites and making traditions inform contemporary sculptural languages. The resulting hybrid sculptures sit between the familiar and the surreal, suggesting botanical growths, anatomical fragments, relics and speculative lifeforms. Ultimately, these ambiguous works trace cycles of decay and regeneration, holding humour and playfulness in tension with darker, visceral energies.
